That's no coon! Gee, but that's a huge possum. I've never seen one that big before!

That's right. I found a possum in my trap this morning. I summarily executed the chicken killing critter.

I was aiming for his spine with the first shot, but didn't exactly hit it. He was already collapsing when I went ahead a put another bullet in him, at the base of his skull. After that he just 'melted' over on his side, tongue lolling out between those nasty looking teeth of his. He hardly even twitched.

The rascal was at least 2 feet long from head to tail-tip, but I actually think he might have been a bit longer. My guess would be that he weighed around 15 pounds. (Several of those being the result of eating my chickens I'm sure!)

Anyway, once I saw the possum, my wonderment in how in the world a coon got through some of those holes in the rooster coop cleared up--it's because it was a possum not a coon! I still wonder though how this possum squeezed through some of those holes.

He sat so still...which made it real easy for me to shot him.

The "Victory" picture. The grass was wet, that's why I laid my pistol on my gloves.
I was glad that I hadn't trapped Shadow...she would have been crazy if I had. I'm still working on trust with that cat. I talk to her, but don't attempt to pet her. She doesn't run away as fast as she used to either...

On another note, the hogs have now started digging up the yard. So...I guess that means that this young'un who is ignorant of the finer points of shooting pigs, needs to go hog hunting. However, the idea of sitting in the dark with misquistoes really isn't the most appealing this time of year. Anyway, I'll think on that...

I'm going to go work on fence this afternoon. Maybe I'll get more than a single H-frame completed... :)

Way to go Racheal!!! I think he was longer than 2 ft from tip to tail. 3ft at least. Did you just guess or did you actually measure? Glad you thought of the trap! Such is the life of a rancher, ay?

I just guessed... :) I did notice while carrying him to the burn pit (by his tail), that if I set his nose on the ground, the end of his tail would have been about half way up my thigh--but that would have been all stretched out.

I just found this....However, like raccoons, they can reach their hands through wire mesh that is too small for their whole bodies to fit. In that last case, they will pull out parts of your birds if that is all they can reach. They can also fit through very small openings for their body size.

    The Middle Kid

I chose to title this blog "The Adventures of a Middle Kid" because that is exactly what I'll be detailing (mostly). I chose 'kid' over any other word, like 'girl' (I am the middle girl so it also would have worked) or 'child'
(since I am no longer exactly a child).

    I am a middle kid and I will always be a middle kid--even when I'm 80!
