Twice in One Week??

That's right. We got to shoot twice in a single week!!

Cousin Butch came down and took us to Slim's per usual. Unlike usual, I had something other than salad. I just didn't want salad today. I had some very tasty and greasy ribs. And yes, I ate the 'steak fries' that came with them. I also had two very good cups of coffee.

Also as usual, we hit the "range" after coming home. I broke into one of those 'antique' boxes of .22 shells. They didn't like my revolver very well, the cartridges getting stuck in the cyclinder. That ammo was also pretty dirty.

I cleaned my guns immediately when we finished. I have a very, very bad habit of putting it off, so like I told Butch, "I'm trying to break that habit." Anyway...we had a wonderful time (we always do when Butch comes)! I hope you enjoy the pictures!

Granddaddy actually shot today!! He hasn't the last couple of times.

I look kind of mean in this one... :D

There...that's better!

Butch's spinner targets he brought with him. They sure are fun to shoot!

The girl with the hat seriously considering spitting a .45...

Dear cousin Butch. He loves to shoot and watch us shoot. :)

Those are my square, grubby hands caressing Butch's .45. That thing has a sweet trigger.

Graceful as always, Savannah sights down the barrel of her little gun...

(Oh, and I mowed the grass since Wednesday--can you tell? :D)
Picture
Butch shot my .22 revolver for a bit. (Look, Snippy's in the right hand side of the frame--but not down range!)

Somebody I know might say something about "Annie Oakley" concerning this picture.... (Annie Oakley I'm not!)

Also of note, this day, August the 9th, 2013 (Happy Birthday, Mama!!!!!!!!!!!), I killed Houdini, Jr.
Another male coon of less size and weight than Houdini, this one did not hiss at me--but he kicked and wheezed and blew blood out his nose a whole lot longer than the other one. I put a second bullet through his brain even though I'm sure the first one killed him simple because I wanted to see if that'd stop his death throes sooner. I don't think it made any difference. I'm also pleased to say that he went straight to the trap last night rather than first raiding the coop. So...I still have 17 birds left. One of which is apparently turning broody.

And...just one more thing. I wanted to share this picture of this tiny little tree frog. Please ignore the fact that my fingers look crazy weird and just look at the frog. Isn't he cute??

Picture
I'm still thinking about hauling the weed-wacker out of the barn and seeing if it works...if so I'll weed-wack around the house and the barn.  Sooo....see ya around! :)

Shooting Fun!!

I haven't had this much fun in days! :D

Two of the girls from church came over today to learn how to shoot. Haley, the younger of the two, really got the hang of it faster than did Amy. Anyway, by the time we went through approximately 230+ .22 shells, both were doing pretty good.

They showed up around 10-ish and spent most of the day with us. We fed them lunch and gave Amy something to eat before they left.

First we shot in the morning...after lunch we went to our place and gathered up a few more firearms and I buglarized the ammo for some .38's.  We were going to go ahead and shoot over there but as the back yard was like a pond, we returned over here and spent the afternoon scaring the edges off the grass.

After blazing through the remaining ammo in the .22 box, we walked down to the creek, eyed some cows, and then came in. I started cleaning the guns while Amy had her snack. I finished them up after the girls left.

I really think both young ladies had a good time...and to prove it, take a look at some pictures. :)

That's no coon! Gee, but that's a huge possum. I've never seen one that big before!

That's right. I found a possum in my trap this morning. I summarily executed the chicken killing critter.

I was aiming for his spine with the first shot, but didn't exactly hit it. He was already collapsing when I went ahead a put another bullet in him, at the base of his skull. After that he just 'melted' over on his side, tongue lolling out between those nasty looking teeth of his. He hardly even twitched.

The rascal was at least 2 feet long from head to tail-tip, but I actually think he might have been a bit longer. My guess would be that he weighed around 15 pounds. (Several of those being the result of eating my chickens I'm sure!)

Anyway, once I saw the possum, my wonderment in how in the world a coon got through some of those holes in the rooster coop cleared up--it's because it was a possum not a coon! I still wonder though how this possum squeezed through some of those holes.
Picture
He sat so still...which made it real easy for me to shot him.

The "Victory" picture. The grass was wet, that's why I laid my pistol on my gloves.
I was glad that I hadn't trapped Shadow...she would have been crazy if I had. I'm still working on trust with that cat. I talk to her, but don't attempt to pet her. She doesn't run away as fast as she used to either...

On another note, the hogs have now started digging up the yard. So...I guess that means that this young'un who is ignorant of the finer points of shooting pigs, needs to go hog hunting. However, the idea of sitting in the dark with misquistoes really isn't the most appealing this time of year. Anyway, I'll think on that...

I'm going to go work on fence this afternoon. Maybe I'll get more than a single H-frame completed... :)

    The Middle Kid

I chose to title this blog "The Adventures of a Middle Kid" because that is exactly what I'll be detailing (mostly). I chose 'kid' over any other word, like 'girl' (I am the middle girl so it also would have worked) or 'child'
(since I am no longer exactly a child).

    I am a middle kid and I will always be a middle kid--even when I'm 80!
